Lesson Two

Lesson Two moves to another vowel sound/color. As with the Lesson One, here are both slideshows and exercises from the OpenWayEnglish workbook.

Several new consonant colors are introduced here to signal some differences. For instance, ‘sh‘ is given its own color because later, in words such as “nation”, the ‘ti’ has an ‘sh‘ sound. For the ‘z’ sound of ‘s‘, as in “nose” or “toes”, a very dark blue is used. This same color is used for ‘z‘, as in zoo, so the children understand that its sound is the same with both ‘z’ and, in some cases, ‘s‘. Also, another color is used for ‘j‘. This signals a similar sounding soft ‘g‘.

Lesson Two Videos

The slideshows follow the same format as in Lesson One. The first only shows blocks of color to indicate the target vowel. The second slideshow reviews the target color for this lesson plus goes over the long ‘o‘ vowel sound of Lesson One.

The consonant practice slideshows are similar to the ones in the last lesson, where vowel/color  are used as the basis for consonant practice.  It’s recommended that students listen to the clip with the sound and then practice without it.

The last slideshow depicts the words in a story context. As lessons progress, the sentences become longer and more complicated. These will give students practice reading real text.

Below is a Workbook PDF. Here, the students practice writing the vocabulary. This helps them form the letters as well as memorize spelling.  There are also pages for Go Fish and flash cards for other activities.
